Interview by Kim Larkin
Surf-trash-pash-punk songs about bad guys who smoke all night, staying out after dark, being loud and high, having fun and losing your mind. There aren’t many bands with just a guitar and a drum kit, recording in a home made studio at the back of a sneaker shop writing these 2 minute songs. “I try and write songs that are pretty short, cause we both have short attention spans and get bored with anything over 3 minutes,” says Alex of Bleeding Knees Club, “All the lyrics on the E.P tend to be about girls, I have no idea why...”
In the past year the Bleeding Knees Club have achieved more than most bands do in 4 years. Forming in March 2010, Alex Wall and Jordan Malane have managed to sell out original pressings of their EP ‘Virginity’, released in October, and are planning to record in New York this year with ‘Lightspeed Champion’, British composer and producer Devonte Hynes; (who has worked with The Chemical Brothers, Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys and Beyonce’s sister, to name a few).
“A lot has happened. I don’t think we ever could have really expected it, so we are pretty surprised by the whole situation” says Alex, “I had just finished uni and the last thing I was thinking about doing was being in a band.” Being a Triple J featured artist, touring with the Big Day Out and having their song “Have Fun” on the Myer Miss Shop national ad still hasn’t changed the boys. “We don’t really like playing on big stages that much,” says Alex when asked about the big festival shows, “I’d rather just play on the floor every show. Playing at home is the best cause all our friends come and it usually gets pretty crazy. We know we will have a good crowd.”
